The Ain River Valley

One of the most beautiful rivers in France!

The River Ain which gives it name to the départment, rises in Franche-Comté to the north and cuts its way southwards through the foothills of the Jura Mountains in Bugey to the River Rhône. With some breathtaking scenery, it is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful rivers in France. The River Ain is home to many varieties of fish and is popular with anglers. Fishing is not the only activity on the river, both canoeing and kayaking are available or why not view this beautiful river valley from onboard a river cruise. Located high above the River Ain are the Grottes du Cerdon, a cave system that was once home to Bugey's earliest human inhabitants. In the hills surrounding the river there are plenty of walking and hiking trails as well as cycle routes, some of which are adapted for mountain bikes. These hills are also home to several historic chateaus and abbeys as well as many charming villages. There is a wide choice of places to stay in the Ain Valley ranging from campsites on the banks of the Ain, to quaint gîtes and lovely boutique hotels in addition to some fantastic restaurants.
