Made up of plateaus, forests and traditional villages, Ain is also home to the highest peaks of the Jura Mountains. In winter, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing go side by side other more unusual sports like ice skating on frozen lakes, dog-sledge rides, or the biathlon. In summer, there is no time to get bored, whether relaxing or trying out extreme sports, sensations are guaranteed!

In winter, glide at your own pace

Here, you will find are no built-up areas or ski boulevards, but an invitation to a simple change of scenery. The Jura Mountains is the land of cross-country skiing. Make the most of its virgin expanses, gentle relief and the recognised quality of its snow. La Grande Traversée du Jura (GTJ) is a great excuse for thousands of adventures.
Do you follow the Grand Schuss? In Ain, downhill skiing takes a very particular dimension. Between 800 and 1,600 m, the slopes offer unique spaces of pure freedom: discover them by gliding down the slopes of Monts Jura, Plans d'Hotonnes and Hauteville. 
Other major activities are hiking and snowshoeing. Various options are available: explore the landscapes from top to bottom following the footpaths, or off the beaten track accompanied by specialists. And keep your eyes peeled: a fox could cross your path at any moment; 
During your travels, make other unexpected acquaintances such as the « musheurs » (dog-sleigh drivers) and their teams... share their passion during a ride or have a go at driving a dog sledge yourself: an unforgettable experience to be had in the majority of our ski resorts! In the case of the biathlon, the mountains of Ain are famous! Of international repute, the stadium of Plans d' Hotonnes becomes a theatre for sporting exploits requiring both stamina and precision. In the summer, whether you want to relax or are looking for sensations, there is something here for everyone!

First up, hiking, horse-rides or mountain biking: paths available for all levels. N.B. when mountain biking, register with la Forrestière, to discover the area differently: valleys, peaks and forests, castles perched on the mountain and the small villages of Bugey. Nordic walking and roller-ski are also available for cross-country lovers missing the snow!
Thrills-seekers, do not let yourself be outdone: canyoning, caving, canoe - kayak, climbing, via-ferrata and paragliding are some of the activities which will show you than in Ain, adrenalin is also guaranteed!
For those in search of relaxation, visit the banks of a emerald green lake Genin, perched at some 831 m, surrounded by firs, spruces and leafy trees. Fishing is also a sport to be reckoned with here, and fishermen can fish for pikes, trout, graylings, carps and fish white: Ain is definitely a destination to be explored!
