The Medieval Town of Pérouges, a step back in time into rural France

#Pérouges #SugarPie #Yum!
Time stood still in Pérouges back in the 1500s… until the 20th century when the superb cobblestoned village was restored and life returned.

The fortified town of Pérouges, unequalled in charm

A village on the hilltop, a fortified church, a jardin de curé, and a square tower… all the typical images of the Middle Ages are found right before your eyes, here in Pérouges! You would be forgiven for thinking you were on a film set, yet nothing here is made from cardboard – all of the houses, streets and shops really were here 6 or 7 centuries before you came and got lost in this little town!

A short stroll is enough to take you back in time, but there are many guided tours on offer as well as a free audioguide if you wish to hear more about the town’s history, or you can visit the museum.

Pérouges comes alive with festivals and fetes

Hoteliers, calligraphers and papermakers are in town all through the year, but if you bump into any princesses or knights in armour, a film is probably being shot here! Or it could be one of the town’s many festivals…

The Medieval Fair that takes place every June is a particular highlight, with parades, shows, markets and all kinds of events, creating a truly unique atmosphere in Pérouges… and everyone is in costume of course!

Pérouges also lends its name to the summer music festival, though not all of the concerts take place in the town itself. The eclectic programme and big names on the line-up make it one of Ain’s biggest events. So why not plan your visit to the medieval village when a show is taking place and spend the evening at a concert?
