Situated at the crossroads of Bugey, Revermont, Dombes and Bresse, this town stretches to the bank of the Ain River, well-known for its ombres and trouts. Loaded up withHistory, Pont-d’Ain has been for a long time a residence place for the dukes of Savoie. Its mill, its canal, its chapel, its castle… Bears precious testimony of life of this village at the crossroads between the pathways from yesterday and from tomorrow. Important way of passing since ever, stretching along the two banks of the river, this town has played an essential role in the conflict between Dauphiné and Savoie, by its strategic position between Savoie and Bresse. Its castle, appreciated residence place of the counts of Savoie, has seen the birth of Louise of Savoie, mother of François 1st, king of France, and its brother Philibert le Beau, husband of Marguerite d’Autriche, who made built the Brou Church.
Right bank, stroll at the banks of the river along the harbor quarter from the bridge in direction of Oussiat, then follow the banks to the mill : you will then discover the Convert mill, built at the end of the 19th, that possessed three sets of millstones working due to the strength of the dam. Take the footbridge, then follow the roadon the right in direction of the roman style church, Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption.
At the time when the Ain River was used for wood floating and merchandises transportation, the “radeliers” often had a break in Pont-d’Ain before joining Lyon. The Ain River is today a quiet waterway offering magnificent tracks by canoeing, accessible to all. One rule : respect nature and fishermen.
Gate to enter the low Ain Vallée, Pont-d’Ain has been for a long time capital of fishing for the ombre commun.
By its great piscicultural richness, the Ain River is the shop front river of the region for all fishing addicts. Apart fromm ombre commun and trout it boasts also white fish like barbell, from whom fishing is really sporting. The lone boasts every kind of species and particularly carnivore fish like pike and carp.
Hiking lovers could take the track of the Mont Olivet culminating at 315 meters, leading them to the former spinning factory of Oussiat, along the Brotteaux, at the heart of charming picturesque hamlets, to the Catherinette chapel (19th), building erected on the ledge of the plateau surrounding the town.
