Work is the very essence of the abbey
Founded back in the 19th century when the Dombes was still a marshland, the abbey has contributed to transforming the landscape and clearing up the region of Ain through the work of its monks. Cistercian monks from the Aiguebelle community in the Drôme region settled here during this time and cleared, drained and developed the land that was then granted to them.
This agricultural work continues today, while the Chemin Neuf Community has now moved into the holy grounds. Man’s work continues to support the local economy as milk, cheese, beef, honey and apples are all still produced here. And of course, visitors to the abbey don’t fail to take advantage of this fresh local produce!
Visits, encounters and spirituality
Notre Dame des Dombes Abbey is open for visits all year round and also plays host to a variety of religious activities, making it an important meeting place. Inside the church, a wall of contemporary religious icons displays the craft of the local workshop which produced them, and which also gives classes in this type of art as well as in mosaics. Philosophy, theology and history classes and conferences also take place here.
In short, it’s a place full of wisdom where you can take a moment to unwind and gain some perspective on the world around you.
