Sougey Farm, a legend at the heart of the Bresse countryside

#MovingMoments in Bresse

Come and watch the summer night-time show, considered the biggest son et lumière (sound and light) display in Rhône-Alpes, or enjoy evenings of traditional entertainment, story-telling or gourmet excursions.

At the heart of the Bresse countryside lies this half-timbered farmhouse with Saracen chimneys, the oldest part of the building dating back as far as 1461. This fine example of traditional Bresse architecture sits in a wooded area of over 35 hectares.

Sougey Farm, the ancestor of Bresse farms! Travel back in time and experience life in the 1460s

The reputation of this magnificent half-timbered farmhouse reaches far beyond Bresse’s borders, due not only to the wealth of its architecture, but also to the personality of its previous owner, Maria Favier, storyteller in her spare time. Enjoy exploring the various buildings: one main building, two operational buildings, an oven, barn, stable and pigsty. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1946, it is a leading hub of culture and festivities with a busy calendar of shows, tastings and guided tours.

Sougey wooded countryside, a place where history, agriculture and nature converge…

Located right in the middle of wooded countryside, the landscape surrounding Sougey Farm is characteristic of the Bresse region, with its prairies, hedges and ancient buildings.
Sougey Farm shows us how our ancestors lived off what they found around them, in nature – Bresse’s wood and clay soils, for instance. Everything had a very specific use and aesthetics didn’t matter. The result is nonetheless rather pleasant – come and see for yourself!

Sougey’s storyteller, Maria Favier, Bresse’s legendary figure

Visitors used to flock here from across France and beyond, just to hear one of Maria’s tales. Her visitors’ book is graced with signatures left by Brigitte Bardot, Jackie Kennedy and many other celebrities. Sadly, she passed away in 2000, at the age of 89.

Saracen chimneys, the great Bresse mystery!

This particular type of chimney is found in the Bresse region alone and there are only around 30 left today. While their exact origins are unknown, they are believed to date back to the 13th century or earlier! Characterised by a small bell tower, named cowl, and topped with a cross, the lower part of the chimney forms a large open fireplace in the main room of the house. The name “Saracen chimney” is thought to come from the strange architecture, so different to anything else in the vicinity that it was referred to as sarrasine, meaning “foreign” in old French.
